The combination of excellent optical performance and a professional grade build makes the lens an obvious winner. The lens is very light and will not be a hassle to carry around at all, yet it feels solid and exudes a sense of great quality. This high performance lens measures 3” x 6.8”. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L is undoubtedly Canon's best value lens of the L-series. The combination of excellent optical performance and a professional grade build makes the lens an obvious winner. Utilizing a Ring Ultrasonic Motor (USM), the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L can focus extremely fast. It is also quiet and accurate. Canon has not let people down by including a Full Time Manual focusing as well. The zoom and focus rings are adequately-sized and handle well. Focusing or zooming will not extend the lens. You can easily attach a circular polarizing filter since the front lens element does not rotate. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L has a minimum focusing distance of 3.9' with a maximum magnification of 0.21x. This makes the lens highly suitable for close portrait and flower photography. Given the performance and relatively inexpensive pricing, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L will make a great addition to your collection especially if you are into portrait photography. I shot under low-light inside the auditorium, approximately 25-30 ft from my subject and with no flash. My images were mostly very sharp under a relatively low ISO. The lens is very lightweight, and is less cumbersome than the 2.8L. The image stabilization is good also, with multiple settings. This is a great lens for someone who finds the 70-200mm f/2.8L series too pricey. The only down side is that there is no collar with the camera, it is an additional purchase. It would have been nice to include that in the price of the lens, because some of these collars can be costly. Overall it performed excellently.
