Using a ring Ultrasonic Motor (USM), the AF is extremely fast and silent. The lens can focus down to 4.6' without rotating the front element. Canon has equipped the lens with a zoom lock button to keep it secure and safe when not being used. There's a 6-blade circular aperture that can help produce a great background blur.

There's very little indication of chromatic aberration, distortion and flare, with vignetting also well-controlled.

As it is, the Canon EF 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM will make a great travel lens due to its compact size and light nature. As a plus, it offers a great optical performance as well. Do note that the lens is not compatible with Canon Extender 1.4x II and 2x II.
