Berger-Bros Camera is proud to announce the newest line is available for pre-order.

Nikon Coolpix S570 (12 MP)

The COOLPIX S570 combines 12.0 megapixels as well as an amazing 5x optical Wide Angle Zoom NIKKOR lens in a tiny package. The COOLPIX S570 has that familiar COOLPIX all-metal design as well as a very bright and large 2.7 inch LCD screen so you have a better idea what your shots look like right on the spot. As far as image stabilization goes, the S570 has of course Nikon’s 4 Way VR Image Stabilization system so you don't have to worry about a shaky hand or a moving subject being a blur. One of it's best feature includes Nikon’s Smart Portrait System that finds faces, removes red-eye, softens skin lines, fires the shutter when the subject smiles and even warns you when they blink so you can retake the photo if need be. Available in Blue, Black, Red and Pink.

Nikon Coolpix S640 (12.2 MP)

The Coolpix S640, like the COOLPIX S570 combines about 12.0 megapixels as well as an amazing 5x optical Wide Angle Zoom, allowing you to print photos up to 16x20 inches! A high ISO of 6400 allows for great photos even in low light and combined with EXPEED, a moving subject in a decent range of lighting will be auto-adjust the correct ISO as well as minimize shutter lag. Available in Light Grey, Pink, Red, and Black.

Nikon Coolpix S70 (12.1 MP)

The new Nikon Coolpix S70 has that sleek portable design that you'd expect from Nikon. People explore new place, see new things and they want to have a visual reminder of their travels. The problem is that most of the time the photographs people take while traveling suffer from several problems, they can be boring, look like everyone elses photos of the same place and don't capture the real feel of the subject. There are a few simple things you can do to improve your photos on your next trip.

Lets first start with equipment. A lot of the time people will take small point and shoot cameras with them when they travel. This is not a bad choice, point and shoot cameras tend to be compact, light weight, easy to carry (all important considerations when traveling) and most of the point and shoot cameras on the market today take good quality photos. There are also small compact cameras on the market today that allow for more creative control than the basic point and shoot, while remaining compact, light weight and easy to carry. The Canon G10 and the Panasonic LX3 are just two examples of these advanced compact cameras. Many advanced compact cameras can yield great results that can give the best DSLR's a run for their money. More serious photographers may still opt to travel with a DSLR camera. Traveling with a DSLR may add some extra weight and baggage but for a serious travel photographer it can be worth it. However, most people can get by just as well with a good quality advanced compact camera.

It is important to consider the zoom range of an advanced compact camera when choosing a camera for travel photography. You want a good range of zoom, wide angles for sceneic shots, but also a good normal to telephoto range for taking more intimate photos and portraits. Using a compact camera can also allow you to take street photos without being too conspicuious.

Regardless of what camera you are using, there are a few simple things you can do to improve your travel photography. The first and most important is to be famillar and comfortable with your camera and its functions. If you are using a new camera on your trip, get to know it first. It may pay to take a class to familiarize yourself with your new camera. Get to know the ins and out of your camera so you don't bumble around trying to learn how to use your camera when you are on your trip. Take practice photos at home and know what functions you like and how to use them. Read the camera manual and remember to take it with you on your trip for reference. Nothing worse than getting the opportunity for that perfect shot and missing it because you can't work your camera! Remember to bring enough memory card space with you, as people tend to take a lot of photographs while traveling. Also, don't forget extra batteries and your battery charger, keep in mind you may need a power converter when traveling abroad.

Once you are familiar with your camera and ready to shoot there are a few things you can do to improve your travel photos. One thing that happens with the photos people tend to take of certain things like landmarks and popular locations is that they tend to look like a lot of other peoples photographs of the same places. There is little to set them apart and make them more interesting. For example, see the three photos of the Eiffel Tower in Paris below, they are shot by three different people, on different days, however, they all look almost identical.

The key is to avoid taking the same identical photographs that everyone else takes and make your photographs more interesting and unique. The most basic thing you can do it to change your vantage point, don't shoot from the same location that everyone else is shooting from. Move closer to the subject and shoot from a different angel as in the photo below.

It is ok to not include the entire structure, the subject is still recognizable as the Eiffel Tower even though you can't see the entire thing. The shot is more interesting because it shows the Eiffel Tower in a different and more creative way than we usually see it. Showing even less of the structure with a subject like the Eiffel Tower can be more visually attractive as seen below.

The photo is still recognizable as the Eiffel Tower, but is more visually appealing and unique than the above examples. So simply by changing your location to a subject you can set your photographs far apart from typical travel photos.

The next thing you can do to set your travel photos apart from the rest is to shoot at different times of the day. Most people visit landmarks during the middle of the day, therefore their photographs will be of daytime scenes. By visiting a landmark at a different time of day or night you have the opportunity to shoot more interesting photographs. For example see the photo below of the Eiffel Tower in the evening, notice how even the typical view of the Tower is made more interesting simply because of the time of day it is shot at.

In addition to shooting well recognizable landmarks when traveling, it can be interesting to shoot street scenes when traveling. Shooting interesting street scenes especially when traveling in other countries and cultures can yield excellent photographs that are not typical vacation snap shots. Using an advanced compact camera comes in handy for street photography. The small camera allows you to shoot without disturbing the natural flow of a scene and in some cases without disturbing the subject at all by making them aware you are photographing them. Look for scenes with interesting colors, or interesting people doing things that you may not be used to seeing at home. Make the photograph tell a story of another culture or way of life. See the photos below for examples.

These photographs are not of recognizable landmarks, but they are just as much, if not more interesting. They show people, culture, lifestyles, landscapes and can set your photographs apart from typical landmark based photos. So make sure to put some thought into your photography and shoot things that are all around you, not just when you are at a landmark, some of the best travel photographs are not of landmarks at all.

Keep these things in mind, be creative, have fun and experiment and you can come home from your trip with some excellent travel photographs!

All About Macro Photography

Macro Photography

Taking close-up photographs of a subject is called 'Macro Photography.' Technically macro photography is when the image projected on the film plane of a camera is the same size as the object in real life. This is referred to as a 1:1 ratio. More recently 'macro photography' has been expanded to describe ratios of 1:2 as well as general close up photography. (A 1:2 ratio means that the image projected on the film plane is half of its actual life size.)

Many new point and shoot cameras can produce great macro photography results. However, to achieve a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio you generally need a macro lens on an SLR camera. A basic setup for macro photography could be a Canon T1i with a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 compact macro lens.

A lens with macro capabilities allows the camera to focus on a subject that is much closer to the lens than a normal lens would allow. Therefore a lens with macro capabilities allows a photographer to focus on and photograph a tiny subject with fine details and achieve the 1:1 ratio. This can allow a large, high quality print of the small subject to be produced.

Macro lenses come in a wide variety of focal lengths. Each macro lens can be used to photograph a variety of different subjects depending on the focal length:

35-60mm range is typically used to photograph products and other small objects.

75-125mm range is the focal length range typically used for flowers and insects.

150-200mm+ range is generally used for insects and small animals.

Another tool for macro photography is an extension tube. An extension tube is basically a tube with a lens mount on one end and a camera mount on the other. This allows the extension tube to fit between the camera and the lens. An extension tube has no optics in it and is used to extend the distance between the lens and the film plane in the camera. An extension tube works in the same way bellows on a camera do, they simply extend the distance of the lens from the film plane. The further the lens is away from the film plane, the closer the lens can focus on the subject and therefore the larger the subject will appear when projected on the film plane. However, there is a trade off, the longer the extension tube, the more light loss there is, requiring a longer exposure. Some extension tubes do not have electronic contacts and therefore will not allow for auto focus or electronic aperture functions to be used. Keep this in mind when shopping for an extension tube.
Another option for macro photography is a close-up lens, (sometimes referred to as a close-up filter.) A close-up lens works in the same way a magnifying lens does. The close-up lens allows any lens to focus closer to a subject. The close-up lens simply screws onto the front of a lens in the same place a filter would attach to the lens. This allows any lens to be used for macro photography.A telephoto extender can also produce macro capabilities. A telephoto extender (sometimes referred to as a teleconverter) is simply a secondary lens, placed between the camera and the lens that enlarges the image produced by the lens and projects it onto the film plane. A telephoto extender effectively extends the focal length of a lens. For example a 2x telephoto extender when mounted with a 150mm lens will produce the effect of a lens with a focal length of a 300mm. Telephoto extenders generally come in 1.4x, 1.7x, 2x and 3x models. The downside to a telephoto extender is that like an extension tube, a telephoto extender decreases the amount of light that reaches the film plane, requiring a longer exposure time. While a telephoto extender allows the photographer to zoom in closer to a subject, the focusing distance remains the same.

Reversing the lens is another technique for macro photography. Reversing the lens is exactly what it sounds like, using a reversing ring to mount the lens backwards on the camera body. A reversing ring is an adapter that screws onto the filter threads on the front of a lens and allows the lens to be mounted in reverse to the camera body. This can be a good quality, low cost way to use lenses you may already have to take macro photographs. This technique can be combined with extension tubes or bellows to achieve even closer focus.
It is even possible to mount a reversed lens in front of a normally mounted lens for use in macro photography. To do this, the reverse mounted lens must be of lesser focal length than the normally mounted lens. The normal lens is attached to the camera in the standard way, and then the other lens is reverse mounted to the front of the normally mounted lens by using a macro coupler. The macro coupler screws into the filter threads on both of the lenses and allows the lenses to be joined together. Using this technique also allows most cameras to maintain full function of electronic features on the normally mounted lens. The magnification ratio can be calculated by dividing the focal length of the normally mounted lens by the focal length of the reverse mounted lens. For example, when a 15mm lens is reverse mounted on a 300mm lens the resulting magnification ratio will be 20:1.

Other things to consider in macro photography:

Depth of field is an important consideration in macro photography. In macro photography depth of field becomes very shallow. Limited depth of field in macro photography makes it essential to focus on the most important part of the subject being photographed. Even parts of a subject slightly in front or behind the focal plane can be noticeably out of focus. It may be necessary to use a small aperture at achieve an acceptable depth of field.

Lighting is another important element to consider in macro photography. Lighting can be especially important because of the need to use a small aperture. However, achieving a bright, well lit subject may be difficult in macro photography simply because of the close proximity of the lens to the subject. A tool known as a ring flash, such as the Canon Macro Ring Light MR-14EX can be used to light a subject that is very close to the lens. A ring flash is a circular flash that is mounted around the front of a lens.<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The brand new addition to Canons successful digital EOS Rebel series will be in stock at Berger Brothers Camera this Friday April 24!

The Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500d) is Canons newest digital SLR camera in the popular Rebel series of entry-level DSLR cameras. The Rebel T1i is the fifth generation of digital Rebels from Canon and is being released just over a year after its predecessor, the EOS Rebel XSi (450d).

The new Rebel T1i has some great new features that make it a great entry-level DSLR camera and a nice upgrade from the Rebel XSi. First and foremost, the Rebel T1i features a newly designed APS size 15.1 MP Canon CMOS sensor similar to the one that appears in the Canon 50d, but specially designed for the Rebel T1i. This makes the Rebel T1i a great camera for making large prints or allowing for tremendous cropping ability while still maintaining great print quality.

The Rebel T1i is first DSLR camera to feature video. In fact the Rebel T1i features 1080p HD video! An HDMI port allows the Rebel T1i to be connected to HDTVs and monitors for easy viewing of video and still images.

Also new to the Rebel series is the 3" Clear View LCD screen that features a 920,000 dot VGA monitor. This is the same screen that is used on Canons more expensive 5D MarkII DSLR. This allows users to have a large preview of their images to check focus, composition and exposure. The Rebel T1i also features a 'live view' mode that allows real time images to be displayed on the rear LCD, allowing for compact camera style shooting with DSLR quality images.

The Canon DIGIC 4 processor allows for continuous shooting at speeds up to 3.4 frames per second up to 170 jpgs, making the Rebel T1i a great choice for parents wishing to shoot action shots of their young sports stars.

The Rebel T1i has many of the features found on the Canon 50d, packed into a lighter body similar to the Rebel XSi body.

Overview of the Rebel T1i features:

15.1 Canon APS size CMOS sensor

ISO range of 100-3200 (expandable to 6400 and 12800)

Full HD video recording at resolutions up to 1920x1080 (20fps at 1920x1080; 30fps at 1280x720 and 640x480)

HDMI connection to allowing for viewing on HDTVs

3.4 Frames per second burst rate shooting for up to 170 jpgs or 9 RAW images

Large 3" Clear View LCD screen with Live View mode

35 zone evaluative metering

9 Auto-focus points with cross type center point (AI focus, One Shot and AI Servo modes)

EOS integrated sensor cleaning system

Compatible with all Rebel XSi accessories

Full compatibility with Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-Speedlites

The Rebel T1i comes bundled with an 18-55mm IS lens. Recognize that there is tremendous competition to have work accepted by a gallery. Do not let this deter you but you must do your homework. Visit any gallery several times before approaching them to make sure that what you are doing fits with what they are showing. Other wise you are wasting your time.

Assuming your work is similar to what they have been showing; ask how they want to see submissions, e.g., prints, cd or website - give it to them the way they want it! If a gallery accepts your work, be prepared to give over half the profits to the gallery.

Another path is to approach so called "vanity galleries." These galleries usually charge you to hang a show and are more interested in your money then the quality of your work. They will give your work exposure but offer no feather for your cap.

If you do get a show put a lot of energy into promoting it. Advertising can be expensive but not making the effort is like not believing in your self. This is especially true if you manage to get into a major gallery. Give it your all.

Preparing to hang a show in a gallery presents many important decisions which you must make and some which the gallery makes for you.

The gallery will no doubt have specific rules for how your work should be signed. Typically, you will be signing photographic prints on the back and listing the title, date taken, media type, e.g., digital print or C print, etc. and width and height of image.

As to signing and putting a title on the mat, there are two schools of thought. Some think you shouldn't put anything on mat front that will detract from image. Others see no problem with this. The decision is yours.

Another big question is whether to cut your own mats. This ties in with whether to use custom or standard image sizes. If you are cropping your images to odd sizes and must custom cut mats it will really escalate costs. Using standard image sizes will let you buy pre-cut mats and find better deals on frames.

If you do cut your own mats, make sure the cuts are clean and crisp. Nothing will detract from your image more then a sloppy mat. You can make matting easier by printing all your work at a standard canvas size but using a smaller image size. For instance, printing a 7.5 x 11.5 image on a standard size 8 x 12 paper.

As for frames...simple black frames are usually the best presentation vehicles. Glass is cheaper but not suitable for larger size frames. Plexiglas can scratch easily. It comes in different types: non glare is the best but costs more.

Good luck, Ken Nadle

Street Photography

Almost from the birth of photography in 1839, there were people taking pictures on the street. Of course, in those early days of photography the shutter was so slow that any people in a street picture showed up as a blur if at all. Beyond this, the cameras were so big and unfamiliar to the public that street photography and the candid seizing of moments of urban reality weren't really possible.

And then, circa 1930 the Leica 35mm camera changed everything. Suddenly, it was possible to have a camera with you at all times. Because of its small size the Leica and the other 35mm cameras that followed permitted photographers to operate with a certain amount of stealth.

The social landscape, as street photography is sometimes called, became a school. The French had a word for these photographers - flaneur...a walker in the city. It implied not only a person walking about looking at things but reflecting on them. Degas, himself a novice photographer was quoted as describing such images as "what you see when passing in the street."

This fascination with life in the street very quickly found its way to the USA and most specifically, to New York City. New York street photography is a genre. In its most perfected form it is a way of seeing the irony and ephemeral nature of city reality. It is not simply a snapshot taken of a street. Rather, it is the use of timing, juxtaposition and framing to capture what Cartier-Bresson called the decisive moment.

Such pictures are not easy to come by. Yet there are those photographers, like Elliot Erwitt, Bruce Davidson, Helen Levitt, Berenice Abbott, Garry Winogrand and many more who have the gift of vision and skill to capture images that speak volumes about human nature, irony and the magic of life.

I believe that some of us are hardwired to appreciate the confluence of seeable elements and reading these is a form of visual intelligence. Such people do not necessarily take photographs...still they see the unspoken message. After all, before there was language there was seeing.

Street photography is a valuable tool for understanding ourselves. Looking at these frozen slices of reality in the calm of a book or gallery permits us to lower our defenses and let in what we might otherwise have missed in the city's hustle and bustle.

Ken Nadle

Nikon D90 DSLR 18-105mm VR Kit

Nikon D90 DSLR 18-105mm VR Kit

The D90 is in the house and the general consensus is that it offers some significant improvemets over the excellent D80. To begin, the D90 has a 12.3 MP CMOS sensor while the D80 has a 10.2 MP CCD sensor. A CMOS (complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) is a sensor touted for its faster operating speed and lower power consumption when compared to a CCD sensor.

The D90 has added a sensor cleaning system and increases maximum ISO sensitivity to 6400 as compared to the D80's 3200. Frames per second (fps) has stepped up from 3 in the D80 to 4.5 in the D90. The LCD monitor on the D90 is a larger 3" versus the D80's 2.5." Add Movie Mode and Live View in the same size body as the D80 and it is easy to see why some Nikon owners might be swayed to move up to a D90.

In various blogs I have seen much debate about how useful it is to have a video capability in a DSLR. There seems to be as many photographers for as against. The D90 can only take 5 minutes of video and while the results are not bad, they in no way match the video capability of a camcorder. On the other hand, having video capability could be useful for that rare moment when you come face to face with Big Foot.

There also seems to be two camps when it comes to Live View. I think it is best to consider these recent innovations as more bells and whistles. It can't hurt to have them available and I'm told that these features do not increase the cost of the camera in any significant way.

Bottom line, the D90 is an improvement when compared to the outstanding D80 and offers users more versatility - not a bad thing if you think about it.

Nikon D90 DSLR 18-105mm VR Kit - In Stock $1,299.99

Nikon D90 Body Only - In stock Now! - $999.99

"Prices and stock availability posted in this blog are subject to change."

Good Photographers are Good Editors

Good Photographers are Good Editors

Let's imagine that you have three good photos and seven mediocre ones. If you show all ten to someone they will comment on the good ones but walk away with the impression that you are not really that good a photographer. Maybe those three good ones were just luck.

If you show only the three good photos the viewer will walk away thinking that you are a good photographer because you haven't shown them anything to prove you are not.

If you are tough on yourself when it comes to editing your own pictures it will not only improve your presentation to others but you will fall in love with each jewel you have isolated as a good picture and be inspired to build on that small, tight group of excellent images.

Also, when you are out and about with your camera, you will start to develop a better idea of what to take and what not to...you are in effect editing in the moment of shooting. Of course, in these wonderful digital times it hurts nothing to snap away with abandon. Sometimes great shots are captured accidentally.

You might be thinking 'how will I know if a picture is good or bad?' Admittedly, some subjective, "artistic" interpretation comes into play but beyond this are some time honored rules of thumb for judging a photo's quality.

1. Is the photo exposed well, is it too dark or too light? Can it be improved in Photoshop?

2. Is it in focus and if not why not? Did you move or use too slow a shutter speed or the wrong aperture? Analyze and learn from mistakes!

3. Does the composition work or detract from the picture? Have you applied the "golden rule of thirds?" Is the eye drawn in the picture by an S curve or the arrangement of elements? Can the picture be cropped to enhance balance and composition? That said, remember that some great photos break the rules but are great never-the-less.

4. Does the picture say anything/mean anything to you? If it speaks to you, it very probably will communicate to others. This is the intangible aspect of photography but when the content is properly exposed, well composed and uniquely interesting...you are no doubt looking at a good picture.

5. Finally, when you show your photos certain images will wind up getting the most acclaim and these will no doubt be good candidates upon which you should begin to build your portfolio.

If you take enough pictures and are tough enough on your self eventually you will be editing to weed out the good pictures from the great ones. You are now at a new level. You might decide to take them around to galleries to try to get a show. This is the time to build a tough skin!

You can minimize the pain of rejection by being familiar with what a gallery has shown in the past. Chances are that if you have felt moved by other shows exhibited in a particular gallery and your work is similar it is more likely to be accepted.

But exhibiting in a gallery need not be your goal. Some people are simply after the mind set that comes with looking for photos. Some are writing an image poem about their own lives. If they do it well, it will be a great source of pleasure to themselves, their family and friends for years to come.

The bottom line is that the process of editing not only focuses your vision, it enhances the impact of your work as a whole and ultimately sharpens your photographic eye.

Buying a Camcorder - What you need to know

Buying a Camcorder - What you need to know

Before you consider the camcorder features you need you must decide which type of storage or capture method is best for your intended purpose. The days of VHS and Hi8 tapes are gone. These were analog capture systems that had problems such as drop-outs, stretch and loss of resolution with each generation of copy. Along came digital capture - a sturdier and more reliable capture media with phenomenal advantages for editing and archiving. Currently, there are four types of digital storage: Digital Tape, DVD, Hard Drive and Flash. All of these capture methods represent a quantum leap forward.

Digital Video Tape

MiniDV is far superior to analog tape. It is a very versatile, high quality recording format enabling transfer via IEEE 1394 (also known as Fire Wire and I-link) and because it is recorded digitally onto tape it can be edited without signal loss. This format was a big improvement over analog formats such as Video8, Hi8, VHS and VHS-C.

MiniDV has become a standard for home and semi-professional video production. At present, it offers the highest quality of any of the recordable storage types. However, tape does have some short comings - it is sensitive to moisture, strong magnetic fields, can break and requires real time transfers to a computer for storage or editing.

DVD

DVD (digital video disk) is a consumer format removable disk that can be played back on most home DVD players and computer DVD drives. The DVD disks used in camcorders are small 8-cm disks which are sometimes referred to as MiniDVDs. They are relatively cheap, can be played back in Blu-ray players and are a handy back-up media that can be stored separately from the camcorder - direct archiving. On the down side, recorded at the highest quality the disks only holds 20 to 30 minutes of video per side for a total recording length of one hour.

HDVD and Blu-ray disks are newer DVD formats offering some improvement in quality to the standard DVD.

Hard Drive

HDD (Hard Disk Drive) camcorders record digitally onto an internal hard disk drive similar to a home computer. This approach lets you back up your recorded video onto your computer's hard drive for archiving, viewing and editing. Capacities of these hard disk drives range form 30 GB to 120 GB - enough space for 14 plus hours of high quality recording. HDD can be damaged from shock or fast movement and can fail with low atmospheric pressure or when used in altitudes higher than 10,000 feet.

Flash Memory

Flash memory such as SD/SDHC and Memory Stick is probably the future for camcorder storage. It is less expensive than hard drive storage and because it is Solid State with no moving parts it is a very rugged storage method - resistant to shock, pressure and temperature extremes and even immersion in water. An 8GB card will record 55 minutes of video.

The Latest Improvements to the Four Storage Types

DVD, Hard Drive and Flash Memory
have been further improved with the introduction of AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition). This is a High-Definition tape-less consumer format using an MPEG-4 compression enabling a much faster transfer of data to the computer when compared to DV and HDV camcorders which require a Firewire connection and specialized capturing software. DVD like menu navigation makes AVCHD a more attractive format for consumer use. AVCHD can be edited but requires a fast computer with a multi-core.

If you have a Mac with iMovie '08, it will import AVCHD footage and convert it to Apple Intermediate Codec so you can edit. The latest versions of Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro, Corel's Ulead Video Studeo 11 Plus, Corel's Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6, Pinnacle's Studio Plus 11 & 12, AVID Xpress Pro, Avid Media Composer and Canopus' Edius Pro 4.5 also support AVCHD.

MiniDV is now available as HDV (High Definition Video) which is an improved recording format for MiniDV magnetic tapes using MPEG-2 video compression. This format records higher quality video compared to AVCHD.

Sony HDR-TG1 High Definition Handycam Camcorder

This is the world's smallest Full HD Camcorder! Cinematone Gamma allows operators to quickly set up and load a gamma curve with similar contrast characteristics to a film gamma curve.

3x 1/3" ClearVid CMOS Sensors w/ Exmor technology

The HDR-FX1000 features three 1/3" ClearVid CMOS Sensors, each having 1,120K total pixels. The 3 independent CMOS sensors each handle one of the color elements – red, green, blue (RGB) – improving the color reproduction of video recordings. Dark scenes can be captured with low noise thanks to "Exmor"-derived technology that features a new column A/D converter and dual noise reduction. Sensor resolution has been optimized and the photosensitive surface area has been maximized thanks to the unique grid arrangement of the photo diode sensors, in which each is rotated by 45 degrees. This model also features the signal processing circuit, the Enhanced Imaging Processor (EIP) which uses Sony's unique image-processing technology.

Enhanced Imaging Processor (EIP) Technology

The EIP processor is able to rapidly process the vast amounts of pixel data read from the "3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor", and record beautiful HD and colorful video. The ClearVid CMOS Sensor has been developed using the most advanced technologies in the semiconductor industry. It handles video data in 1920 x 1080p and 4:2:2 color space for high-quality signal processing before recording it to tape in the HDV format2. Combined use of the EIP and 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor imaging system allows the HDR-FX1000 camcorder to provide extremely high image quality with a smooth gradation and detailed image reproduction.

G Lens: 29.5mm Wide-Angle to 590mm (20x) Telephoto

The HDR-FX1000 is equipped with a 29.5mm wide-angle "G Lens" made from advanced 10 group, 15 element lens including "Extra-low Dispersion glass" which reduces chromatic aberration caused by light refraction, and produces video with extremely low color fringing. Designed for shooting situations ranging from broad landscape shots to conditions where sufficient distance from the subject is difficult to obtain. The 20x optical zoom (29.5mm-590mm: 35mm conversion) lets you zoom in to the subjects you can't get close to. The optical zoom takes maximum advantage of the lens performance, so image quality does not suffer even at a zoom ratio of 20x, allowing you to faithfully reproduce the subject's impact. The digital extender increases zoom by 1.5 throughout the range up to 30x at full zoom.

Superior low-light (1.5 LUX) shooting capabilities

Superior low-light ability with high sensitivity enables clear shooting of subjects in light as low as 1.5 lux (at 1/30 fixed shutter speed with auto iris and auto gain). This allows you to capture sharp detail and brilliant colors even in less than perfect lighting, especially when professional lighting cannot be used.

3x built-in neutral density (ND) filters

Gain more color control in extreme settings with three built-in ND filters for adjusting the amount of light entering the Image Sensor through the lens. Depending on shooting conditions, the operator can chose from Clear, 1/4, 1/16, or 1/64 filters. In strong, glaring sunlight these filters give users more flexibility in choosing the shutter speed and aperture for superior creative control.

3x manual rings for superior control: zoom, focus, and iris

The HDR-FX1000 has three independent manual rings (zoom, focus, and IRIS ) for superior control and flexibility while filming which make it easier to promptly make adjustments to meet shooting needs. The IRIS ring allows you to adjust the aperture to attain optimal brightness and express beautiful depth of field shots, highlighting a subject while blurring a foreground or background. Exposure can also be assigned to the IRIS ring enabling the camera to automatically select the optimal iris, gain or shutter speed, seamlessly enabling adjustment of exposure.

3.2" Xtra Fine LCD display (921k pixels)

The 3.2" Wide (16:9) Xtra Fine LCD screen displays sharp, bright, vivid images, letting you compose a shot more easily -- even outdoors, while enabling you to change settings to best represent the scene. With 921K pixels resolution and a wide viewing angle, the XtraFine LCD screen is like having a HDTV built into your camcorder.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

The Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization System from Sony reduces blur caused by camera shake and vibration, so your images stay crisp and clear. This optical stabilization system achieves an even higher level of smoothness without the image degradation that can occur with some digital stabilization systems.
...much more about the HDR-FX1000 here on its product page

Sony HVL-F58AM Digital Camera Flash
The HVL-F58AM flash unit delivers flexible lighting control for (alpha) DSLR photographers. As Joel Lucks points out in his article Above the Timberline, if you are hiking into the wilderness you must be prepared.

Assuming you have the maps, compass, water, food and stamina here are some photographic requisites for bringing back great pictures and undamaged equipment:

First, evaluate what photographic equipment you must have. Obviously, you need your camera, memory cards and batteries. If you are hiking for a day or a weekend one extra battery and card are enough. If you are on some extended outback trek you will probably want to invest in a Promaster Go! All five models normally ranging in price from $79.99 to $99.99 are now on sale from $39.99 to $49.99

Second, decide if you will need a tripod, a monopod or something versatile like a Joby Gorillapod (10 inches long and just 8.5 ounces) - $49.99 or maybe no tripod at all.

Third, and this is a key question - do you have a camera bag that will keep your equipment dry in a downpour or clean on a dusty trail? Let me recommend three - a great back pack and two waist holsters: The National Geographic Medium Backpack - $149.99, the Lowepro Topload Zoom 2 waist holster - $29.99 and the thinkTank Digital Holster 20 - $54.99 that cleverly unzips at the bottom to accommodate longer zoom lenses. The back of my throat became drier and raspier as my altitude increased but with every switchback came the promise of another great vista and photo op.

Our climbing group was warned of some snow on the trails but it did not prepare me for the deep snowfields at those higher altitudes. At times I would sink up to my knees or slide on my butt into, gratefully, soft snow. Finally, after climbing for five hours, We reached Ouzel Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park and experienced the thrill that comes from a successful climb and the magnificent view at 10,000 feet.

Hiking the peaks of any mountain system is not a solo sport. There is something to be said for the camaraderie, of course, more importantly there is the safety factor. My training emphasizes minimum groups of 3 people; one to stay behind with a downed hiker, the other to go for help.

And physical training cannot be taken for granted. Include in your preparation a weekly workout schedule that includes a rigorous aerobic exercise, weight lifting, and proper nutrition. As a New York State Department of Environmental Hiking Guide and a Leukemia/Lymphoma Nationally trained hiking coach, I can honestly tell you that you cannot over train for tough, altitude hiking.

Likewise, having the right equipment for a mountain ascent is critical and includes a hydration bladder, daypack or a backpack, trekking poles, proper hiking boots (no sneakers, please), and proper layering, to include rain gear. And this says nothing about selecting survival equipment such as matches, lighters, signaling devices, a knife, sunscreen, water filters, and more.

When you are already carrying 25 pounds or so, adding additional weight in camera equipment becomes an exercise in keeping it real. I use a ThinkTank holster that is readily available at my waist. It keeps my camera, filters, extra cards and batteries dry and cushioned.

If you have any comments or questions about hiking and photography join our forum. A dream come true. Nikon has just introduced the Nikon D700 which incorporates many of the features of the incredible Nikon D3 in a body similar in size to the D300. Add a pop-up flash and shave off a couple of thousand dollars and you have one hell of a camera.

The D700 has a full frame, 12.1 MP, CMOS Image Sensor and fast continuous shooting capability of up to 5 frames per second (up to 8 fps with the optional MB-D10 Multi-power Battery Pack and EN-EL4a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery or eight AA-size batteries).

The start-up time is 0.12 seconds with a shutter release lag time of just 40ms - that is fast! Other assets are Nikon's 51-point AF system with 3D focus tracking, two Live View modes and a normal ISO sensitivity range of 200 to 6400 but can be boosted to an incredible ISO 25,600 or set down to ISO 100.

The shutter on the D700 is reported to be good for 150,000 exposures rather than 300,000 on the D3. The viewfinder has 95% coverage. And, although the D700 has a full frame sensor, DX lenses can be used and the viewfinder will be automatically masked to reflect the reduced 5.1 MP capture.

Also notable and an improvement not available to the wonderful Nikon D3 is Image Sensor Cleaning, which is activated when the camera is turned on or off and can also be activated on-demand by the photographer.

The D700 has a rugged magnesium alloy body with connections and buttons sealed against moisture. The camera even has a virtual horizon feature that indicates if the camera is level. As of today we are accepting pre-orders of this camera and its accessories. Expect them to arrive in our store at or around Aug 1. 2008.

At first glance you would think this is identical to the D300 but a quick check on this SLR's specs will tell you a much different story.

The D700 sports a 12MP full frame FX format for simply magnificent photos and even a full frame viewfinder. This is somewhat comparable to that of the D3 but with a couple of advantages. First advantage is that its body is like the more compact D300. The second advantage over the D3 is that the D700 is officially the first professional Nikon camera with a built-in flash. Thirdly, the camera even includes an internal image sensor cleaning with micro vibrations to rid the sensor of any dust particles as seen in many of the new SLRs in the market. The shutter speed is slightly slower than the D3 at 5 frames per second but with the MB-D10 battery grip, you can raise that up to 8 frames per second.

Here's some other features to the D700:

More flexible "hard button" programming

Live View w/ virtual horizon line

ISO 200 - 6400

Same ultra-fast startup and shutter lag as D3

HDMI HD video output

3.0" 922,000 pixel LCD monitor

UDMA compatible single CF card slot

More info on our product pages or simply call our 800# at 1-800-262-4160

Here are the available models to order:

Nikon D700 (12MP) SLR Body

Nikon D700 (12MP) Outfit w/24-120mm VR Lens

Also check out Nikon's Brand New accessories that go with the D700 and other Nikon cameras:

<img src="http://www.berger-bros.com/blog/uploaded_images/Nikon_SB_900-729109.jpg" border="0" alt="" style="cursor: pointer; Berger Bros. customer, Catherine Grey sent us the wonderful desert photo above. It is a great example of how striking foreign vistas can be and how talented some of our customers are.
Of course, travel photography also puts us in the midst of different cultures of which we may know little. A case in point is a story related to me by another Berger Bros. customer, Marcy, who also travelled to Morocco.
While in Morocco, an expensively dressed and jewelled American woman was shooting up close in the faces of veiled Moslem women who were clearly unhappy about it and were trying to avoid her unsuccessfully. In their defense, Marcy went up close to this would be paparazzi and took her photo. The woman freaked. Marcy stood there quietly and said nothing. The woman's husband, however, got the message and led his wife away saying, "come with me dear and I will explain it to you."

Enjoy your travels this summer. Be prepared with extra memory cards, storage back-up devices, spare batteries, multi voltage chargers and adapters but also be a considerate
traveller sensitive to other culture's attitudes.

Essaouirai, Morocco Photo Catherine Grey

Versatile Lenses Ideal for Travel

All of the compact lenses below are suitable for a wide variety of shooting situations ranging from wide-angle landscapes to portraits, action and close-ups. The SLR-ZOOM model is the largest of three models and can support up to 6.6 pounds of camera and lens yet it is small and surprisingly light - just 8.5 ounces and less than 10 inches long.

It has sturdy legs with flexible joints that can bend and rotate 360 degrees so you can fasten it to a steering wheel, fence or pole for a rock steady shot. Also accepts professional tripod heads which I would recommend to make it fully functional - $49.99

Lensbaby

A Lensbaby is a cleverly designed 50mm coated lens in a flexible barrel that can be moved to selectively pin point an area in the image to be in sharp focus while leaving everything else blurry.

For those who enjoy building an image in the viewfinder, this lens can be a lot of fun. While it might be possible to imitate this selectively sharp and blurry effect in Photoshop, it would not be easy. The lens must be used manually and the aperture is set using magnetic rings with different diameter openings that stick to the front of the lens. Whether you take pictures of flowers, portraits or landscapes, the Lensbaby will add a creative new look to your imagery. The Lensbaby 2.0 is $149.99
The Lensbaby 3.0 works the same way as the 2.0 but the desired effect can be locked in place mechanically for more precise control. The Lensbaby 3.0 is $269.99

Olympus E510 D-SLR with 14-42mm & 40-150mm Zoom Lenses
Considering this camera's very high rating in a recent Consumer Report issue, I felt it was worth mentioning again. The E510 is a 10MP digital SLR with Live View, an effective Dust Reduction System and a 2.5 inch HyperCrystal LCD that lets you see the screen with amazing clarity in bright sunlight and from angles up to 176 degrees.

Another clever design feature is the use of two memory slots - one for a compact flash card and one for an xD card. You can even transfer images in camera from one card to the other. This is an excellent all-around, travel, children, sports camera.

There is real value here. The E510 D-SLR two lens kit 14-42mm & 40-150mm is just $649.99

Great Cameras for Mom

Great Cameras for Mom

Choosing a camera for mom on Mother's Day can be a confusing exercise - there are so many choices.

To make your life a bit easier, I asked some of the very experienced sales people here which camera they would give to their own mothers. Leave your meter, gray cards and color charts at home. The <storng>ExpoDisc is a custom white balance filter that allows digital photographers to quickly and easily set an accurate custom white balance. Using ExpoDisc will greatly reduce the need for RAW or JPEG (see March 2008) post-capture color adjustments. Simply place the ExpoDisc in front of your lens and capture the incident light (the light illuminating the subject) while setting your camera's custom white balance.

The Expo Disk comes in neutral or portrait versions in sizes from 58mm to 82mm.
You don't need one for each lens. Just get a size big enough to cover your biggest diameter lens and it will work fine with any smaller diameter lenses as well. Prices range from $89.99 to $109.99. </storng>

Important Announcements
Berger Bros. Spring is here. As this photo attests, Janis Dorfeld is another talented photographer teaching at Berger Bros. Camera. Don't miss our tips for taking beautiful macro pictures such as this. See below. Ansel Adams, one of the best known photographers in the world, has inspired millions of people with his wonderful photographs of natural scenes. Two favorite Ansel Adams quotes to take with you as you set out this spring, camera in hand - "A good photograph is knowing were to stand." And, "Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop." So, take a lot of pictures and edit, edit, edit!

Buzzy bee -Macro Photography

Many photographers find nothing more rewarding than a walk through a garden with an eye for capturing the beauty of flowers and/or the fascinating world of insects. Following are some tips on how to get stunning Macro (close-up) pictures of flowers, insects, stamps, coins or anything else that upon closer inspection reveal unseen and very often magnificent details. The very simplest approach is to just back up a bit and then zoom in. This is the approach used on these shots by Janis. She handheld a Canon 20 D with a 28-135 mm lens and mentioned, "you REALLY want to use a telephoto lens when photographing stinging insects!". For tamer subjects, another simple approach is to set your camera to Macro - this is often depicted as a flower on your camera's mode dial - and move in close. Because the depth of field in Macro mode is often shallow, it is important to carefully focus on what part of the flower you, 'the artist' want to have in sharpest focus, e.g., the stamen or maybe a tiny red lady bug on a yellow petal. This is where a tripod is very useful.

A clever accessory to use with a tripod is a Plamp- - it hooks onto your tripod and has a clamp at the other end to grab flowers and position them where you need them to be.

Investing in a macro lens for your DSLR or a close-up filter set can increase just how close you can get to your subject. Close up lens attachments are also available for some point and shoot cameras.

As you compose your shot, try reducing the elements that will appear in the image to increase the visual impact. And, using a wide open aperture will also add to the picture by throwing the background out of focus. In a sense, you are not only painting with light but with focus.

You can take close-up photography to the next level by learning different lighting techniques for macro photography including the use of macro ring lights and reflectors. Yvonne Berger will be giving a class on this very subject on Saturday, June 7th from 9am to noon at a private residence in Northport. An array of macro lenses, flashes, reflectors and ring lights will be available for use during the class. Briefly stated, images captured in the RAW format are not modified or compressed in the camera and must be post processed in the computer. JPEG images are compressed in the camera and all settings (exposure, white balance, color space, noise reduction, sharpness and contrast) are applied before being posted to the memory card.

Shooting in JPEG gives you ready to print images right out of the camera. Normally, no post processing is required. however, if the file is post processed, because it is a compressed file, sometimes referred to as 'lossy', each time it is opened, worked on and saved, some data is lost. You can get around this shortcoming by renaming the file using the "Save As" option.

Because JPEG's are smaller, more manageable files, faster burst speeds are possible when shooting in continuous mode and many more images can fit on the memory card. Also, because JPEG's are written in a universally recognized format, they are readable by all imaging programs and easily transmitted wirelessly or via e-mail.

Shooting in RAW means having to post process every shot but gaining much more control (your computer has more processing power than your camera) and you can overcome any mistakes you made when choosing camera settings, e.g., incorrect exposure or white balance settings.

A big plus for RAW is that when post processing the format is non-destructive or 'non-lossy.' No matter how many changes you make, the original RAW file is untouched. Further, RAW captures 12 bits of brightness data while JPEG's capture 8. What this means is that an image shot in RAW has 4,096 discrete levels of brightness and a JPEG has only 256.

It should be noted that after enjoying the advantages of post processing in the RAW format, the final image can be easily converted to JPEG (you can not convert a JPEG to RAW). The newer DSLR's let you shoot in RAW and JPEG fine at the same time so you get the best of both worlds albeit much larger files.

If you are fascinated by digital photography, I predict, you will not be able to resist the tug of shooting RAW. Yes, there is a lot to learn but if having more control over image quality is important to you; if you are shooting a once in a lifetime event - RAW is the way to go.

The Nikon D60 DSLR

If you are looking for a D-SLR that is easy to carry, easy to use with intuitive controls and can take 500 images per battery charge, then the D60 is a great choice.

The D60 is a 10.2 MP DSLR capable of shooting 3 frames per second, with fast start up and split-second shutter response. The D60 shares the same body as the D40x but internally adds an active dust control system, improved noise reduction and cleaner image processing.

With a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to ISO 1600 and Nikon's new 18-55 vibration reduction image stabilization lens, the D60 is capable of use in a wide range of lighting conditions. It has eight shooting modes: Auto, Auto Flash-off, Portraits, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close-up and Night Portrait.

IN THE NEXT ISSUE

New Pentax K20 D

New Canon 450D XSi DSLR

Macro Photography of flowers, bugs, coins & stamps

What Ansel Adams said about photography

Breaking News, Alerts, Firmware Updates, and other things you should know

Why You Should Switch To Digital

DIGITAL NEWS - February 2008

In This Issue -

Welcome All

Cutting Edge Cameras

Battery Alert!

Why shop at Berger Bros. Camera?

Why you should switch to digital if you haven't already

WELCOME ALL to the first email newsletter in a new series about cutting edge digital cameras and accessories, image capture advice, and important things we think you should know to make you a better photographer. We will also alert you to some great deals and remind you of our coming events.

CUTTING EDGE CAMERAS

Any of the digital cameras manufactured in the past few years, be they point and shoot or DSLR, will not disappoint you. The level of sophistication, the speed and accuracy they offer is astounding. That being said, each camera has its own unique layout, its own ergonomics and features. That is why it is essential that you, the user, get the camera in your hands and see how it feels - if it makes sense. Add to this, the seemingly, never ending improvements to these cameras and this too becomes a factor in analyzing which camera will be best for you. For Elph lovers, Canon has just unveiled its Powershot SD 1100 IS and this camera certainly qualifies as cutting edge in the point and shoot world. Canon Powershot SD 1100 IS This Elph has an 8.0Mp sensor and a 3x zoom (38-114 equiv) with a 2.8 - 4.9 lens. The shutter speed range is 15-seconds to 1/1500-seconds. With an ISO range of 80 - 1600 and image stabilization, the SD 1100 IS will handle just about any shooting situation. It can take 1.3fps and has more than 30 shooting modes including video and audio. It is SD/SDHC compatible and comes in six different colors.

BATTERY ALERT

Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation has prohibited loose lithium batteries in checked baggage. The following rules apply to the spare batteries you carry with you:
Spare batteries are the batteries you carry separately from the device they power. When batteries are installed in a device they are not considered spare batteries.
You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked luggage
You may bring spare lithium batteries with you in carry-on baggage

WHY SHOP AT BERGER-BROS CAMERA?

If you have been to either of our stores recently, you may have seen fliers citing all the free stuff you get when you purchase a digital camera from Berger Bros. Camera. This is no small thing. In fact, we know it is the best deal in the industry. For as long as you own your new camera purchase, Berger Bros. offers the following: FREE SERVICES & SUPPORT
Digital 101 beginner camera class to bring you up to speed
Sensor & camera cleaning - especially good for DSLR's
Memory card recovery of lost or accidentally deleted images
Firmware updates that improve camera functions
Repair loaners (limited time period)
30 minute at-home, private lesson on your computer in photoshop (min 1hr)
15 minute phone support with Yvonne Berger at 516 233-0479A recent email to Brad Berger, president of Berger Bros. from satisfied customer JS, speaks well of what has been the philosophy of the store for the past 55 years, "I am originally from a small town on Cape Cod as well as being old enough to remember how nice it used to be doing business with people on a personal level and I find it extraordinary to experience this level of personal service in 2008 and 3,000 miles away." Many more testimonials can be found at Berger-Bros.com.
And for added peace of mind, remember that Berger Bros. is an authorized dealer for everything we sell. All equipment carries USA warrantees and we never sell gray market items.

WHY YOU SHOULD SWITCH TO DIGITAL IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY?

If you think film is better you are on a sinking ship. Choices in film stock have narrowed considerably and the major camera manufacturers have all but stopped making film cameras. Why? Because even die-hard film enthusiasts are awe struck by the advantages of digital. No more risk of having your film fogged by airport security. Less worry about running out of film - you might run out of memory cards but then you can always start deleting "so-so" images to make room for new ones. You can shoot pictures at any ISO (light sensitivity) on the same memory card. You can take a picture without flash at ISO 1600, then go outside and take your next shot at ISO 100. You can even send the images via satellite the instant you take them. And consider that you never have to buy another roll of film or wait to have the photos developed. The memory card has no moving parts, is virtually indestructible and can be used time and again - reportedly, millions of times. Add to this the ability to check in the shooting moment if you got the shot and it is no surprise that virtually all of the working photojournalists today have switched to digital.
If you are thinking of making the switch or have already, take the Digital 101 Beginner Course - free with a digital camera purchase - but well worth the $50 if you bought your camera somewhere else. The course introduces you to digital fundamentals and gets you off on the right foot. Digital 102 is an intermediate level course, which recaps the fundamentals and then exposes you to the neat and often extraordinary possibilities this latest crop of digital cameras provide. The course covers the ins and outs of white balance, histograms, color space and much more. But the great photographers of the past didn't need all this fancy equipment to take great pictures
True. But it was no walk in the park either. Consider Brassai, the French photographer, famous for his book Paris de Nuit (Paris at Night). In the early 1930's, he lugged around a 6 x 9 Voigtlander camera and a box of 24 glass plates (the film of the day). He would have to leave the aperture open for five minutes or more to take a picture and timed it by smoking a cigarette. Would he appreciate one of today's digital cameras with 3200 or 6400 ISO, vibration stabilization and a tiny memory card capable of storing hundreds of pictures? You bet he would.

In the next issue

Nikon D60

Jpeg vs Raw

Berger Bros.
