Intro to Telescopes
Stargazing is an enjoyable hobby for people of all age groups, and space exploration has made it more popular than ever. Today's computer-guided telescopes make it easier and more affordable to see the wonders of the universe.
There are several types of telescopes which include refractor, newtonian and dobsonian reflectors, and Schmidt-Cassegrain or Schmidt-Maktusov design.
Each one will allow you to see such objects as the moon, planets, galaxies, nebulas, star clusters and other heavenly objects, using different. technologies. The most popular telescopes are the electronic reflector or Schmidt types, with hand held computer-guiders which find the objects and keep them in view.
Making the Right Choice
With so many choices, it is important that you find the telescope which best suits your needs and budget. When it comes to telescopes, size matters.
Keep in Mind
- Aperture Size - A telescope with a large aperture, or opening will gather more light which permits viewing of dimmer, more distant objects.
- Magnification - This is a function of the focal length of the telescope, and the higher the focal length, the greater the magnification is.
While the focal length can be increased through the use of more powerful eyepieces, there is a point of diminishing returns where no greater performance is possible, and a larger telescope is required.
Berger Bros. carries a complete line of telescopes and accessories, and there are always knowledgeable people to help you make the right decision.
