Using a combo of LiDAR, dual 100MP RGB cameras, and a high-precision POS, the DJI Zenmuse L3 Long-Range LiDAR Payload can provide deep-penetrating and highly accurate terrain reconstructions and survey maps at great distances. In fact, it can achieve ranges up to 3116' on objects with just 10% reflectivity. This kind of performance is due to the L3's 1535nm LiDAR with up to 2 million pulses per second at a rate of 100 kHz. Plus, a laser beam divergence at just 0.25 mrad (1/e2), for a spot size that's one-fifth that of the L2. Data is captured simultaneously to create point cloud, DOM, DEM, and mesh maps. Together with a Matrice 400, these missions can cover up to 38.6 square miles per day.
Scanning Modes
- Linear: Consistent point cloud distribution for high-accuracy terrain mapping
- Star-Shaped: Maintain accuracy with multiple scan angles and penetration to handle dense environments, such as forests or urban areas
- Non-Repetitive: Broad coverage and multiple scan angles to pick up power lines and complex structures
POS System
To help create consistent and reliable survey results, the Zenmuse L3's POS system achieves a heading accuracy of 0.02° and a pitch accuracy of 0.01° (post-processed, 1σ). This helps the LiDAR deliver range repeatability of 0.2" at 492' (1σ) and supports microsecond-level time synchronization.
LiDAR Data Accuracy
The Zenmuse L3 supports 1:500, 1:1000, and 1:2000 ratio mapping missions, thanks to its precision accuracy at various altitudes. At 393', accuracy is better than 1.1"; at 984', it's better than 1.9"; and 3.9" accuracy is possible at 1640'. The payload also offers a point cloud thickness that's half that of the previous generation.
Photogrammetric Accuracy
Without ground control points (GCPs), real-time position synchronization is possible thanks to the dual 100MP RGB cameras. They can achieve a ground sample distance (GSD) of 1.1" up to 984' in the air. This helps to ensure precision mapping that utilizes high-quality images.
Software Integration
Zenmuse L3 is part of an end-to-end solution across multiple DJI products, such as Pilot 2, FlightHub 2, and Terra software. Pilot 2 can recommend flight parameters for the L3 and create a point cloud preview. The L3 can assist in following power lines at up to 426' with high accuracy. Pilot 2 can display split-screen views of the L3's LiDAR and RGB data. L3 data output works with FlightHub 2, creating real-time point cloud SLAM reconstructions in 2D and 3D, syncing them to the cloud for editing and management.
